- Parents who already send their children to a school give the most useful information about it.
- Look for tuition and activities close enough that the evening does not disappear in traffic.
- Helping children find one friend in the building and one at school makes the first term much easier.
Adults can survive a few lonely months in a new area. Children find it much harder. A move means a new school, new teachers, a new bus route and, worst of all for a seven-year-old, nobody to play with in the evening. For a teenager it can mean leaving behind friends of ten years in the middle of board exam preparation.
As a parent you are juggling all of this while also unpacking, sorting out the gas connection and figuring out where the nearest vegetable shop is. It is easy for the children's side to slip, and then the first term goes by with your child coming home quiet every day.
This guide is about the parts of settling in that matter most for families with kids: choosing a school, finding tuition and classes nearby, and helping children make friends in the neighbourhood.
Choosing a school when you don't know the area
If you are moving mid-year, you may already have limited options. If you have time, the best information comes from parents who already send their children to these schools.
Questions worth asking other parents:
- How long is the school run at 7.30 a.m., and is there a school bus or van on your route?
- How much homework do children get at your child's level?
- How does the school communicate with parents: diary, app, WhatsApp?
- What happens on heavy rain days? Are holidays announced in time?
- Is there a parents' group, and is it friendly to newcomers?
Visit the school if you can, ideally at drop-off or pick-up time. You will see how the gate is managed, how children come out, and how parents talk to each other. For more on daily logistics, our piece on school runs, carpools and playdates goes deeper.
Tuition, classes and activities nearby
In Chennai, after-school life is busy: tuition, Carnatic music, Bharatanatyam, abacus, chess, swimming, football. In a new area, the challenge is finding good options close enough that the evening doesn't disappear into traffic.
| What you need | Where to start |
|---|---|
| Maths or science tuition | Parents in the same class, the building's parents' group |
| Music or dance | Neighbours whose children already learn, temple and sabha notices |
| Sports | The nearest ground or club, weekend coaching camps |
| Art, craft, coding | Home-run classes in nearby apartments |
Many of the best classes in Chennai are run from homes: a retired teacher who takes six children for maths, a dancer who teaches in her hall. These rarely have big signboards. You find them through other parents. When you do, ask for a trial class, ask how many children are in a batch and talk to one or two existing parents.
Helping children find playmates
This is the part that matters most to children and is hardest to arrange.
- Go downstairs at playtime. In most apartments there is an evening hour when children gather in the play area or on the terrace. Take your child down at the same time every day for the first two weeks.
- Talk to the other parents. Children follow their parents' lead. If you chat with the mother on the bench, the kids will usually join each other's game.
- Host something small. A simple evening snack for three or four children from the building, a kite afternoon on the terrace before Pongal, a board game hour.
- Join a weekend activity. A Saturday football session or a library hour puts your child with the same group every week.
- Be patient with teenagers. Older children may not want your help. Offer options, a club, a sports group, a volunteering drive, and let them choose.

Making the home side easier
A few things help the whole family feel settled faster:
- Save a paediatrician, a clinic open late and the nearest pharmacy in your phone in the first week.
- Know the building's rules for children: play-area timings, cycling in the driveway, terrace access.
- Keep a spare key with a trusted neighbour for days when your child gets home first.
- Find one other family you can call in a pinch for a school pick-up.
Where Zinola fits
Zinola is a free neighbourhood app and website for Chennai, and several parts of it are useful for parents who have just moved.
- Circles for school and building. Zinola has School group circles for parents, and Apartment circles often have a Kids & parents group inside, alongside General and Announcements. Circles can be closed or invite-only, so a parents' group stays among parents.
- Classes and tuition nearby. The Marketplace has a Classes & tuition category and a Kids & baby category, nearest first. Tap "Enquire" for a private chat; numbers stay hidden. The businesses directory has a Tuition & classes category with reviews from local people.
- Kids' events. The events page lists nearby events, Kids is one of the categories, and hosts can mark an event as good for kids or families. You can mark Going or Maybe and get a reminder on the day.
- Ask other parents. Tap + and choose "Ask a question", say "Good swimming coach near Anna Nagar for a nine-year-old?". Answers neighbours agree with rise to the top.
- Pre-loved kids' things. Children outgrow cycles, school shoes and books fast. The Marketplace is a good place to pass them on or pick them up.
The first term will be the hardest
Give it a term. Most children adjust faster than their parents expect, once they have one friend in the building and one at school. If you are setting up your own home at the same time, our first-week moving checklist covers the practical side.
