Need a Reliable Plumber, Electrician or Carpenter? Start with Your Neighbourhood

A dripping geyser, a tripping MCB, a sagging wardrobe door. Before you call a stranger from a search result, ask the people next door. Here is what to ask each trade, how to get a fair quote and how to check the work before you pay.

Need a Reliable Plumber, Electrician or Carpenter? Start with Your Neighbourhood
In short
  • Neighbours in the same building face the same problems and can answer follow-up questions.
  • Ask each trade specific questions before work starts, and get a clear quote that does not change.
  • Check the work before they leave, then recommend good workers honestly to the next neighbour who asks.

The geyser in the second bathroom has started dripping. The MCB trips every time it rains hard. The wardrobe door has been hanging at an angle since the last Diwali cleaning. None of these is an emergency today, but each one will become one at the worst possible moment, usually on a Sunday evening or in the middle of a monsoon week.

Most of us handle this the same way. We search online, scroll through a list of names we have never heard of, call two or three, and hope. Sometimes it works. Often the person who turns up is from across the city, quotes one price on the phone and another at the door, and is never seen again if the leak comes back.

There is a better first step, and it is sitting a few doors away. The people on your floor, your street and your apartment block have already hired plumbers, electricians and carpenters for the same kind of building you live in. Their experience is the most useful shortlist you will find.

Why your neighbours are the best first filter

A neighbour's recommendation carries three things a random listing usually cannot.

  • The same building, the same problems. If you live in an older independent house in Kothrud, Pune, your wiring and pipes are not the same as those in a new tower down the road. A neighbour who had their concealed pipes fixed in a similar house knows whether the plumber understood that kind of work.
  • Someone you can ask follow-up questions. "Did he come on time? Did the leak come back after a month? Was the bill close to the quote?" You can ask your neighbour all of this at the gate.
  • A worker who wants to keep the area. A carpenter who does three jobs in your lane has a reason to do the fourth one well. Local word travels fast in both directions.

None of this replaces your own judgement. A recommendation tells you who to call first. It does not tell you the job will be done right. That part still needs a few careful questions.

What to ask each trade before they start

Different trades need different questions. Here is a short checklist to keep on your phone.

Plumber

  • Can you come and see the problem before giving a price, or will you quote on the phone?
  • Is the price for labour only, or does it include parts like taps, valves and pipe fittings?
  • If a joint leaks again within a few weeks, will you come back to fix it?
  • Do you bring your own tools for cutting tiles or opening concealed lines?

Our guide on how to find a reliable plumber goes deeper on leaks, motor problems and tank cleaning.

Electrician

  • What do you think is causing the trip — a faulty appliance, a loose connection or an overloaded circuit?
  • Will you switch off the main before working, and will you test the earthing?
  • What brand and rating of wire, switch or MCB will you use, and can I see it before it goes in?

Electrical work is where shortcuts are dangerous. Our guide on checking an electrician before you hire lists the safety points worth insisting on.

Carpenter

  • Will you repair the existing hinge or channel, or does it need a full replacement?
  • What material will you use — plywood, block board, or something else — and which grade?
  • How many days will the work take, and will you clean up the dust and offcuts?

Getting a fair quote without a fight

Prices for small home jobs vary a lot across your city, and there is rarely a single "right" number. What you want is a clear number that does not change without a reason.

  1. Describe the job clearly. "Kitchen sink leaking from below, about a cup of water a day" gets a better answer than "sink problem".
  2. Ask for labour and material separately. This makes it easier to compare two quotes and to see where a change came from.
  3. Agree on the visit charge. Many workers charge for a visit even if you do not go ahead. Ask up front.
  4. Write it down. A short WhatsApp message — "₹X for labour, parts extra at bill, starting Saturday" — saves arguments later.
  5. Pay for finished work. For bigger jobs, an advance for materials is normal. Keep the rest until you have checked the work.

Checking the work before they leave

This is the step most of us skip because we are relieved the person came at all. Take five minutes.

JobWhat to check before paying
Leak repairRun the tap or flush several times; look under the sink with a torch; check again the next morning
Wiring or MCBSwitch on the usual load (AC, geyser, mixer) together; check that the switchboard is not warm
CarpentryOpen and close every door and drawer; check that the screws are flush and the edges are smooth
Painting or touch-upLook at the wall in daylight, not just under a tube light

If something is not right, say so while the worker is still there. It is much easier to fix now than to get someone to come back next week. For painting jobs, see our guide on hiring a house painter.

Where Zinola fits

Zinola is a free neighbourhood app and website for India, and asking for a good tradesperson is one of the things it is built for. It does not book or hire anyone for you, and it does not take a fee. It helps you find out who your neighbours already trust.

  • Ask a question. From the + menu on Home, ask "Can anyone suggest a carpenter near Salt Lake who does wardrobe repairs?" People around you reply, answers that neighbours agree with rise to the top, and you can mark the one that sorted it.
  • Recommend someone. When a plumber does a good job, you can recommend them from the same + menu so the next person does not have to start from zero.
  • Your circle's trusted helpers. In an apartment or neighbourhood circle, members keep a board of trusted helpers — maids, plumbers, electricians and others — vouched for with "I use them too". Numbers are visible to members only. These helpers are vouched for by members, not checked by Zinola, so the questions above still apply.
  • Business reviews. Local businesses listed on Zinola businesses carry reviews with overall stars plus six areas: Quality, On time, Updates, Price, Ownership and Attitude. You can send a business a private enquiry or a quote request.

If you want to see how a single question turns into a shared answer, read One Neighbour's Question Can Help an Entire Community.

Make the next person's search easier

Once your geyser stops dripping and your MCB stays up through a heavy rain, take one minute to pass it on. Reply to the next neighbour who asks. Recommend the person who did a good job, and be honest about what could have been better. A building where everyone does this slowly builds a list of people who show up, quote fairly and come back when something goes wrong — and that is worth more than any search result.

Questions people ask

How do I find a reliable plumber in Chennai?
Start by asking neighbours in your building or street who have had similar work done, then ask the plumber for a quote that separates labour and parts. Check the repair before paying and look again the next morning.
Can I book a plumber or electrician through Zinola?
No. Zinola does not book or hire anyone and takes no fee. It helps you ask your neighbours and see who they recommend; you contact and pay the worker directly.
Are the trusted helpers in a Zinola circle checked by Zinola?
No. Trusted helpers are vouched for by circle members with "I use them too". Zinola does not check them, so ask your own questions before hiring.
What should I check before paying an electrician?
Switch on your usual load together, such as the AC, geyser and mixer, and make sure nothing trips and the switchboard is not warm. Ask what brand and rating of wire or MCB was used.
